Genentech Sonic ID's

These are two of the finalists that I created for the Genentech ID with foley work described from my last blog post.  Unfortunately neither of these were chosen (these were my 2 favorites), but follow this link for the final brand: Genentech Final Sonic ID

What Goes Into a Sonic ID.

(download)

Yesterday and today I was recording Foley for the creation of Genentech's sonic ID.  We'll soon be posting the finished piece and I'll explain a bit more of the process once it's all out in the open.

Here are some photos and a bit of description of the process:

Taking recordings of these different wine glasses to use for the new Genentech sonic brand. Each had a distinct timbre and pitch that were later placed into a sampler were we tweaked until satisfied.

The smaller crystal glass was used the most for the final and the striking utensils are bottom right.

There are a few shots of my arrangement in Ableton which show a very simple arrangement view mixing the organic tones of the wine glass and the bowls with a few instances of Native Instruments Absynth (Always a sound designer go to).

Also recorded dropping corn and lentils in glass and porcelain bowls and also onto foil. The corn had a much heavier/dramatic quality while the lentils were much lighter. The foil gave a more metallic/dulled sound, but worked great when resampling.

All versions turned out excellent- very clean and creative.  I look forward to sharing the final!
